Setting Real Time WIP Levels in Production Lines

چکیده

(No page numberings) Abstract— A new algorithm is developed for setting WIP level in production lines. It is a pull policy that determines when to authorize a job to be processed. Dynamic information in the system such as machine failures and repairs, and demand variations are taken into consideration to provide an efficient method to dynamically determine the WIP level. Two types of production lines are examined in this paper. The first is production lines which have few random interruptions and the second production line is exposed to frequent interruptions. Experiment results from these two types of production lines illustrate that the new algorithm generates higher service level with lower WIP compared to the CONWIP policy. In addition, the superiority of the new algorithm is more significant when the production line is exposed to frequent random interruptions.

Reduction of production disturbances of a shoemaking industry through a discrete event simulation approach

This study presents a reduction of production disturbances of a shoemaking industry through discrete event simulation approach. The study is conducted at Peacock Shoe factory found in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  This factory faces line balancing problem that becomes production disturbance for its assembly lines. Detail time study is carried out for the selected shoe model using stopwatch. Assembly ...

Estimating the throughput of an exponential CONWIP assembly system

We consider a production system consisting of several fabrication lines feeding an assembly station where both fabrication and assembly lines consist of multiple machine exponential workstations and the CONWIP (CONstant Work-In-Process) mechanism is used to regulate work releases. We model this system as an assembly-like queue and develop approximations for the throughput and average number of ...

Constant Time Interval Production Planning with Application to Wip Control in Semiconductor Fabrication

We develop a constant time interval production planning and control methodology, called CONSTIN, and its associated simulation system for a large-scale and unstable semiconductor manufacturing process. CONSTIN moves work-in-process inventories (WIP) between processes only at a constant time interval, and consequently maintains a desirable level of WIP. Our theoretical and experimental analysis ...

On the Workload Allocation Problem of Short Unreliable Production Lines with Finite Buffers

Serial flow or production lines are modeled as tandem queueing networks and formulated as continuous-time Markov chains to investigate how to maximize throughput or minimize the average work-in-process (WIP) when the total service time among the stations are fixed (this is the workload allocation problem). This paper examines the effect of the unreliability of the machines on the optimal worklo...

Modeling of Hybrid Production Systems with Constant WIP and Unreliable Equipment

Material flow in production systems can be controlled by a purely push-pull (just-in-time), or by a hybrid push-pull control mechanism. One type of push-pull production control can be implemented by controlling only the last stage during part withdrawals to trigger the production at the first stage. While the final stage is operated according to a pull mechanism, intermediate stages are operate...
